Intuitive Eating

WHAT IS IT?

What is intuitive eating?
It is listening to your body and what it is trying to tell you.
Does it crave something salty? Or maybe some green veg?
Intuitive eating is also about pausing and thinking if you are hungry or not. How hungry you are.

Intuitive eating is not about perfectionism or tracking your macros. It is about self care and nurturing your body. Eating this way creates a healthy relationship with food. Which is something most of need more of, even if we don't like to admit that.

RESEARCH

Research shows that Intuitive Eating is associated with:
  • Greater satisfaction with life
  • Better body image
  • Improved eating behaviors
  • Greater optimism and well-being
  • Lower BMI
  • Better weight maintenance
Like anything to do with food and nutrition, this approach will work for some people and not others.
There is no one magic pill to make every single person healthy in their mind and body.
But if you think about it, how successful have your other food choices been in the past? I believe that for most people intuitive eating is worth a try.
TOP TIPS:
  • Don't ignore your hunger. It is normal to feel hungry. By not obeying hunger feelings, your body can react with binges and cravings
  • Stop labeling food as "good" or "bad". No one food is either healthy or unhealthy. The same goes for labeling yourself as "good" or "bad" for eating certain foods. What you eat does not have the power to change who you are
  • Keep checking in with your body to listen and feel for signs that you are full. This can take some practice but the signs are usually there if you stop and listen
As babies and young children we are all intuitive eaters. But things change as we grow older. Restrictions, rules and emotions come into play. And it is these that need challenging and changing.

As part of our nutrition coaching sessions I work with all my clients on aspects of eating behaviours helping them achieve a better relationship with food.
